First popular in the 1970s, the shag, was a heavily layered cut worn by stars like Jane Fonda, David Bowie, and Tina Turner who embodied that era’s rebellious spirit, according to InStyle.com. According to PopSugar, in 2024 the shag haircut started to become more versatile and take on a modern look, of being ultra curly and ultra layered. One would think the shag haircut would then go out of style, not quite. In 2025, the shag haircut still retains its popularity and versatility. This summer, the shag cut focuses on volume, movement and texture.

The Modern Shag
The modern shag is all about choppy layers that add volume and movement to the hair; it works on all hair textures and types. But looks best on curly to wavy hair since it enhances natural texture and movement, according to Byrdie

The New Shag
The New Shag is all about using softer layers to create a less choppy, more feminine cut that still maintains the shape and feel of a classic shag. This haircut includes bangs, waves, and plenty of layers, according to Southern Living
Shaggy Mullet

Or the "shullet" as it's come to be known, blends two of the most prominent cuts from 2024: the shag and mullet,’ explains Andrew Heasman, International Creative Director at RUSH HAIR. "The shullet does combine the volume, shape and length of the mullet with the natural texture, movement and disconnected layers that are typically featured in the shag cut.’" Heasman recommends "Pairing it with a heavy or wispy fringe, opt for shorter layers throughout the top section, leaving longer length in the back and side sections. It’s about being creative and trying something new," according to Country and Townhouse

The Blunt Shag
This effortless style is finished with blunt ends that add texture to this modern spin, according to Southern Living

The Wolf Cut
The Wolf Cut is low-maintenance thanks to choppy, feathered layers that look naturally lived-in, according to Glamour. "The Wolf Haircut is a mix between a vintage shag and a slight mullet," says Sarah Potempa, celebrity stylist. "Essentially, it's like taking two different periods (the '70s shag and '80s mullet) and smashing them together into a modern-day look," according to InStyle.

The Choppy Shag
The Choppy Shag features layered, choppy pieces that gives the hair an effortless, lived-in vibe, according to Allure
